Boston Red Sox: Shortstop Mike Aviles Keeping Hot Jose Iglesias in Pawtucket

Going into this season, one of Boston’s most intriguing position battles involved the shortstop spot, with veteran Mike Aviles battling prospect Jose Iglesias for the starter function.

Aviles ended up winning the job, and Iglesias was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket to further operate on his hitting. He hadn’t been a powerful hitter in the past, nor was his defense stellar, but Aviles’ play in the course of spring coaching was sufficient to convince manager Bobby Valentine and general manager Ben Cherington that he could manage the job.

As it’s turned out, Aviles has played much greater than expected. Given that Jacoby Ellsbury went down with a shoulder injury, Aviles has taken more than the leadoff spot for most of his absence. Today marks Aviles’ 27th begin atop the Boston lineup, and he has truly shown what he’s capable of.

He’s hit leadoff property runs in back-to-back days off Philadelphia Phillies pitchers Joe Blanton and Cliff Lee. He also homered in the series-opener against Cole Hamels and now has a total of eight lengthy balls on the season.

In addition to his .277/.305/.500 offensive line, Aviles has been above typical on defense as well. He’s only committed three errors this year and has the third-finest UZR among shortstops.

Now down on the farm, Igelsias didn’t start off the season like he needed to, only hitting .200 through April. Issues have totally changed in Might, though, as he’s now currently hitting .282/.333/.336 with 23 runs and five additional-base hits in 32 games. Over his last 10 games, Iglesias has hit .370 with 17 hits in 46 at-bats, scoring nine instances.

Iglesias was called up to Boston earlier in the season to possibly play when Kevin Youkilis went down with an injury. He did not seem in a game and was later sent down so Will Middlebrooks could be called up. Iglesias did play in ten games with the Red Sox final season, but he did not see considerably time at the plate.

There’s no doubt that Iglesias is the future shortstop of the Red Sox, but at the moment, Aviles is playing lights out. Despite the latest success for Iglesias at the plate, Aviles has been that a lot much better and deserves the beginning role.

Boston Red Sox – TeamReport

Might 15, 2012|Reuters

MLB Team Report – Boston Red Sox – INSIDE PITCH

There’s an easy explanation for why the Red Sox have won 4 consecutive games.

Greater pitching.

Including Jon Lester’s 119-pitch complete game Monday night in a 6-1 win more than the Mariners, Red Sox pitchers have posted aŁ.98 ERA in 4 games given that Friday night. And it starts with the starters. Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, Daniel Bard and Lester all have pitched well since Josh Beckett got trounced Thursday night by the Indians.

“I assume when you watch your other guys as a staff, we’re pretty prideful in what we attempt to do,” Lester stated. “When you begin seeing guys succeed and producing pitches and getting out of jams, the offense comes in and picks our guys up if we give up a run, score one more run, and just keep adding on that confidence. Everyone talks about confidence and feeling very good. it just keeps developing and you feel like, if I purchase into what we’re carrying out and execute pitches, every little thing will take care of itself. I feel that is been our mind-set the past 4 nights.”

Lester lastly appeared ace-like once again in shutting down the weak-hitting Mariners at Fenway Park. He did not situation any walks, struck out six and allowed eight hits. He did not allow a baserunner through four 2/three innings and didn’t let a ball out of the infield till a flyout to right field in the fifth inning.

It marked Lester’s eighth profession full game and the first complete game by a Red Sox pitcher at Fenway Park given that Lester went the distance in a 6-two victory over the Twins on May possibly 20, 썚.

“He went out, and it looked like he had a mission to achieve and he accomplished it,” manager Bobby Valentine stated. “He was throwing all of his pitches early in the game, throwing them all for strikes. He had a quite confident appear about himself.”

MLB Team Report – Boston Red Sox – NOTES, QUOTES

–OF Daniel Nava hit his very first home run in 171 main league at-bats, a stretch that he was glad to see lastly finish. Nava’s first homer, a grand slam against Philadelphia’s Joe Blanton, came on the first pitch he saw in the majors immediately after getting named up in 2010. This one was a two-run shot in the fourth inning Monday night to aid pace the Red Sox’s 6-1 win more than the Mariners.

“When I hit that one, I was like, ‘Thank God, I am not going to have just a single,’” Nava said. “That’s all I was thinking. I wasn’t expecting to. I wasn’t trying, it just occurred.”

Nava has reached base safely in 15 of 20 plate appearances and has reached three times or much more in 4 of his five games since becoming recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket.

–C Kelly Shoppach hit his first residence run of the season and his initial as a member of the Red Sox with a solo shot in the fourth inning Monday. The homer was the second of his profession at Fenway Park and initial because Could 30, 2007, with the Indians. It snapped a 54-at-bat stretch with no a homer and a 17-game homerless drought, the fourth longest of his profession. Shoppach has reached base safely in 12 of 14 begins this season.

–3B Kevin Youkilis was eligible to be activated from the disabled list Monday. Instead, he continued to throw and hit in anticipation of his return from a lower back strain. Youkilis is expected to come off the disabled list in the coming days, at which point the Red Sox will have to make a choice about rookie 3B Will Middlebrooks. Manager Bobby Valentine mentioned it would be “a small premature” to speculate on regardless of whether Middlebrooks would stay in the majors or be sent back to Class AAA Pawtucket, despite the fact that he intimated strongly that there would be small to be gained from the top prospect sitting on the bench when he could be playing every day in the minors.

“These factors normally play themselves out, and there’s no need to make a decision until it really is time to make a decision,” Valentine stated.

–RHP Josh Beckett will try to place behind final week’s controversy when he takes the mound Tuesday at Fenway Park. Beckett was criticized for playing golf on the Red Sox’s off-day May possibly 3, one particular day immediately after being skipped for a single turn in the rotation because of a stiff lat muscle. The Red Sox defended Beckett by claiming the move to skip his turn was precautionary and that the pitcher wasn’t classified as being injured, and Beckett insisted his activities on a day off had been nobody’s company. He returned to the rotation final Thursday night and got pounded for seven runs in 2 1/three innings by the Indians. Manager Bobby Valentine mentioned he hopes Beckett has put behind all the golf distractions. Right after final week’s start, Valentine recommended Beckett could have been tipping pitches. On Monday, Valentine declined to divulge if the team’s video evaluation of Beckett’s current begins have confirmed that belief.

Scott Atchison: Boston Red Sox New Super-Reliever

Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

Yesterday, I looked at how the Boston Red Sox bullpen has gone from getting the worst in the game to being the finest more than the past two weeks. A single player who has been solid because the quite commence of the season is Scott Atchison.Atchison leads all key league relievers in innings pitched with 24 innings therefore far. That workload has helped him to rank amongst the best ten in Fangraph’s WAR for relievers, tied with last season’s best closer Craig Kimbrel with .5 WAR. His durability, combined with an enhanced strikeout rate and walk rate, has created Atchison a centerpiece to the Red Sox retooled bullpen, one thing that no 1 in baseball saw coming.

Back in January, Scott Atchison designated for assignment to make area for Cody Ross. The 36 year old righty had to clear waivers to stay with the Boston Red Sox and all 29 other teams passed on him. Given that returning from Japan, where he pitched from 2008-2009, Atchison had turn into an organizational solider for the Boston Red Sox, moving back and forth in between Boston and AAA Pawtucket as required and pitching as a spot starter and mop up man when required. His profession 3.70 ERA and 3.85 FIP do not make him an elite reliever, and ahead of this season, Atchison seemed destined to life on the borderline of the major leagues.

This season, nonetheless, something has changed. It would wrong to overlook the element of luck in Scott Atchison’s good results this year. He has a .232 BABIP and a left-on-base percentage of 91.8%, each of which are not sustainable going forward. Even so, Atchisonhas shown a handful of tenancies that indicate he could be slightly greater than the pitcher who initial returned from Japan. His control has been acquiring much better and better considering that his return to MLBand his strike out rate has been climbing up as nicely. More than his last 79 innings, he has a K/BB ratio of 3.43, comparable to elite relievers like Kimbrel, Andrew Bailey  and Ryan Madson. Add to that a GB% of 52ǐ% in the final calendar year and you have a one particular time replacement level pitcher who, at 36 years old, is becoming a force in the late innings.

Atchison’s very best top quality is not his stuff, nonetheless. Although heavier reliance on his curve and his slider/cutter hybrid have raised his punch outs, he is most beneficial to the Red Sox due to the fact he can pitch many innings. Atchison is now finding himself filling an crucial role in the bullpen, the role that Alfredo Aceves played last year. In 2011, the present closer pitched 114 innings, 93 of them in relief. Ace averaged over an inning and a third out of the bullpen and helped Terry Francona  deal with the his pitcher’s inability to go deep into game. This season Atchison is on pace to pitch practically 99 innings and appear in 71 games, a quite related workload to Aceves.

Atchison is a guy that is straightforward to root for. He signed with Boston in 2010 mostly so that he could be closer to his then-two year old daughter who was getting treated for a uncommon bone disorder in the Boston location. He has done every little thing the team has asked of him, shuttling back and forth in between the minors and the massive league club as required. At 36, he might not have considerably time left as a massive league pitcher, but it would be wonderful to see to him invest his final few seasons as a key member of the Boston Red Sox new and enhanced bullpen.
